Brother
Title: Brother
Summary: That's just how it works
Rating: PG
Warnings: incest! No sex on screen though.
Update: one-shot
Other: for PWKM, promt was "Jake and Neil. Incest. Sex...with a cactus." SADLY, NO CACTUS HERE. And I've read hot TeniPuri with that kink too :/ Now you know why I never removed that from the list, thought it deserved a proper try from someone

It was snowing when Neil was born, Jake fascinated by it since it didn't snow back home. They were visiting relatives for the holidays, but his mama had gone into labor and Neil was so small, he couldn't believe mama let him hold him. But she did, smiling as Jake treated his younger sibling like he was the most precious thing in the world, which he was of course.

He knew he had lots to teach the other boy when he gets older, all that good stuff he's picked up and of course he needed to learn more, he didn't know near enough to be a really good teacher to Neil. But he would try, and he knew his parents would do stuff too. Everything would turn out perfect.

Jake is a good brother. He doesn't complain at all about having to come straight from school to pick up Neil, or taking his little brother with him when he hangs out with his friends. All his friends talk about how they hate being forced to spend time with their little siblings, but Jake isn't being forced. He likes being around the six year old, likes how those young eyes look up to him and trust him and think he's perfect.

He knows he's Neil's world, so of course he doesn't mind if his little brother becomes a big part of his. He knows that his friends are fun right now, but years and years down the road it'll be Neil that's around, Neil that he can hang out with. Because that's how brothers work.

The move is uneventful, painfully so in light of everything else. California is close enough weather wise that it isn't weird, though the time shift takes his body a while to get used to. Neil keeps to himself, focusing on his studies and reading, still not making any new friends two months into them living there. Jake makes the wrong kind of friends, ones that talk him into late nights and things he would normally say no to- nothing ever illegal, or really wrong, but he isn't so much right these days.

Jake does make the meals, waking up early each day to prepare for them, making time on the weekend to write a list of what they need to stock up on. If he's in the house, he makes a point in joining Neil, who always eats in him room now. The two will talk, even joke, but the mood isn't the same in the house. It will never be the same and Jake knows somewhere that he's trying to run away from the fact that he can't fix this, can't make everything like it was.

He knows a ten year old watches him as he leaves the house, a 'friend' walking closer then that title would imply. They don't talk about it, but the look in Neil's eyes whenever he comes back from those visits makes him nervous. And he can't say why.

His father isn't happy when Jake casually talks about what his carrier plans are. The sixteen year old moves now hair out of his face, some part of him waiting for it to turn into a yelling match. Neil is no where to be seen, but the next time they cross paths his little brother smiles, something that he sees far too little these days, and Jake has to grin back. He would follow in his mother's footsteps, regardless of what his father had to say.

The first time he's drunk, thank god their father is out of town. The nineteen year old stumbles inside the house, no idea what time it is and not really caring. He just knows it's dark, he somehow got home, and he wants to find a bed now. Of course Neil is standing in the hallway, arms crossed and frown on his face. Shit. And of course he doesn't say anything, just helps him towards the bedroom, helps him get undressed and into bed, all with that frown on his face that just about kills Jake.

When he wakes up the next morning, he has to have about the worst hangover ever. He aches, and doesn't really remember much of anything and- oh shit is ther; no, just his brother. But god, both of them are naked and Jake feels the bottom drop out of his stomach since this actually feels good. Neil is draped over him, and he's pretty much forgotten the hangover as his mind panics on what to do.

He ends up doing nothing, since Neil is the one who kisses him.

He knows the rumors about them, knows how people talk about how the prosecutor and his detective brother seem a bit too close, how they live together and don't seem to pay attention to personal space at all.

He knows his father knows about the rumors, but he has yet to say anything to either of them.

He also knows that despite how much he likes women, their curves and hips and soft parts, the way they smell and taste and feel, more then anything else he likes his brother best. It's been that way since the beginning, and it'll be that way to the end. That's just how it works for the brothers.
